Hounds Tooth Check provides surface dental cleanings for cats and dogs. The purpose is to remove the calculus ("tartar") buildup before it progresses into dental disease and to educate the pet owner about home dental care. The typical cost is $80 - $100.
This technique is not a replacement for veterinary cleanings or for regular home care. Daily teeth brushing is still the most effective way of reducing or avoiding periodontal disease in pets.
So maintaining oral health in pets has three aspects: Home care; veterinary care; and dental hygiene. Hounds Tooth Check provides dental hygiene in the form of surface cleanings.
Note:
Because this is done without anesthesia, no extensive "under the gum" work can be done. If your vet feels your pet needs a full periodonal cleaning and extractions, this technique will not be useful. However, in cases where a pet cannot undergo anesthesia for some other health reason (heart murmur, age, sensitivity to anesthesia), there may be benefit in at least reducing the amount of overall buildup.
Senior animals and animals with pre-existing chronic health conditions should always be on protective antibiotics before a dental cleaning is attempted. Only your vet can prescribe antibiotics. If you have any concerns, please contact both Hounds Tooth Check and your veterinarian before scheduling an appointment.
Other Services:
Hounds Tooth Check can also provide an educational presentation on pet dental hygiene and care, with hands-on training in teeth brushing, for breed club events. Contact us for more information.
